The group's name merely appeared on the festival schedule when it was issued late Wednesday night, hidden humbly among performance times for hundreds of long-ago scheduled performers. This late-breaking development was not announced with any great flourishes or fanfare.
The band is scheduled to perform in the Sahara tent at the festival on Friday from 6:45 to 7:35 p.m., sandwiched between some acts who aren't quite as well-known as Blink-182, and before Metro Boomin finishes the night on that stage at 10:35 p.m.
When the times for the events were revealed, Blink-182 wasn't the only unexpected name. James Blake, who had not previously been scheduled, was unexpectedly added to the list and scheduled to perform on the Do Lab stage on Friday at 8:30 p.m.
Was the introduction of Blink-182's look intended to be so understated? It's likely that the festival and/or the band decided that letting fans find it on their own, late at night, would be more entertaining than making a big deal out of it. The day before the event, at 1 a.m. PT on Thursday, there was still no mention of any such upcoming appearance on the band's website or social media profiles.
Since L.A. radio station KROQ teased a major surprise act earlier on Wednesday evening, observant listeners were able to make an educated guess as to what might be going on. The background music from Blink's "All of This" served as a not-so-subtle hint.
Prior to late Thursday, the Blink-182 tour was expected to start in St. Paul on May 4, which was two months later than the original itinerary.
After what turned out to be nearly eight years of absence, the band announced in September 2022 that founding member Tom DeLonge would be reuniting with Mark Hoppus and Travis Baker to resurrect the original three. The tour was initially slated to kick off March 11 in Tijuana, Mexico, but fate stepped in when Barker hurt his finger twice during rehearsals in February. As a result, the band first revealed surgery was required before finally announcing on March 3 that the tour would be delayed by two months.
It would be traditional for the band, having joined the Coachella list for this weekend, to reprise its performance on the second Friday of the festival, April 21, in the same Sahara tent slot. However, no official announcement of the band joining the Coachella lineup has been made.
