Julia Schlaepfer had roles prior to 1923 in programmes including Madam Secretary, American Horror Stories, and The Politician, but 1923 was unquestionably her breakthrough performance.

In the film, Brandon Sklenar and Julia play the free-spirited Alex and Spencer Dutton, respectively. From Africa to Europe and then on a perilous voyage to Montana, where Spencer is expected to save the family ranch, their passionate love tale takes them. The couple's journey is at the centre of 1923, and season 1 leaves them on a heartbreaking cliffhanger.
