Grand Admiral Thrawn|Lars Mikkelsen|Star Wars Rebels|Disney+|Dave Filoni: Everyone was curious who would play Grand Admiral Thrawn, one of the greatest, baddest Star Wars villains who has never been seen in live action, when it was revealed that the new Star Wars Disney+ series, Ahsoka, will be a sequel to Star Wars Rebels. Dave Filoni, the creator of the series, ultimately made the announcement official at Star Wars Celebration 2023. On Star Wars Rebels, Lars Mikkelsen provided the vocal work. An exclusive Ahsoka teaser clip that was only shown at Celebration broke the news.

Mikkelsen collaborates with Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Ahsoka's buddy who promised to look for their common friend Ezra Bridger, and Rosario Dawson as the titular character, a former Jedi apprentice now off on her own in a galaxy far, far away. Eman Esfandi plays Bridger, which has been previously mentioned but has not yet been made public. Of course there is also Hera Syndulla, the captain of the Ghost team, who is portrayed by Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Upon his homecoming, Mikkelsen exclaimed, "It's amazing." On Rebels, the actor recorded Thrawn's voice remotely, but at the time, Filoni questioned the actor about his travels to Los Angeles. Afterwards, he understood that was the director considering calling him in to reprise the part in person.

Timothy Zahn, who invented the character for his classic book Heir to the Empire (a term particularly referenced in the Ahsoka trailer), was approached on the casting and use of Thrawn on the show, according to Filoni, and further discussions will take place in the future. It doesn't matter because he lacks the Force, Filoni added. He will trick you, trap you, and play chess better than you, he promises.

Filoni continued, "I feel very, really blessed to bring [Thrawn] to life in this way, and Lars does too, and we want to make sure we get it right. In August, Disney+ will debut Ahsoka.
