In one of three new Star Wars movies, Daisy Ridley will reprise her role as Rey.

Three new Star Wars films, including one in which Daisy Ridley will reprise her role as the Jedi hero Rey in a galaxy far, far away, have been announced by Walt Disney Co.

In a story that takes place 15 years after the events of the 2019 movie The Rise of Skywalker, Ridley will portray her character, Rey.

According to Disney, the future film will centre on restoring the New Jedi Order as forces gather to destroy it.

At the yearly Star Wars Celebration fan conference in London, film producer and actor Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, unveiled the new projects and appeared on stage to proclaim the rebirth of the successful franchise.

Lucasfilm, producer of Star Wars, was acquired by Disney in 2012 for $4US billion ($6 billion), and since then, three successful movies have been released, along with a number of related TV programs, on the Disney+ streaming service.

The direction that Star Wars will take on the big screen had been eagerly awaited by fans.

Following the debut of Rise of Skywalker, the studio halted production on additional Star Wars films.

Rogue Squadron, a movie slated for release this year, as well as a few others that were in the early stages of development, were abandoned.

According to Kennedy, the second of the three upcoming movies would travel in time to tell the tale of the first Jedi to use the Force.

The third book will take place in the present and follow the development of a conflict between the Imperial Remnant and the newly formed New Republic.

Producers Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau, who created the well-liked Star Wars TV series The Mandalorian, will serve as its directors.

The movies don't have any set release dates.
