Alanis Morissette and Ed Sheeran will serve as guest judges on American Idol
Ironic, isn't it, that two Americans would perform at King Charles' coronation while a Commonwealth citizen and a Brit assume responsibility for their obligations domestically?

This week on American Idol, judges Katy Perry and Lionel Richie are leaving for England to take part in King Charles III's coronation.

Alanis Morissette and Ed Sheeran will replace Perry and Richie as guest judges on the May 7 episode of American Idol, according to a Monday night announcement from ABC. The remaining finalists, who will play her songs during this week's competition, will receive mentoring from Morissette as well.

The Idol finalists will collaborate to perform duets of Sheeran's songs, giving his song catalogue a showcase as well. Furthermore, live performances by Sheeran and Morissette will be held on the Idol stage.

During the Sunday night episode, Perry and Richie will still check in from the UK to provide updates from Windsor Castle.

This season of American Idol has seen a lot of turmoil, including several candidates' sudden departures on their own initiative and Perry's demand that one performer use less glitter.

The current set of finalists will battle on Sunday night to determine who advances to the final five.
