Jonathan Groff, star of Glee and Mindhunter, has a significant part in Doctor Who

Jonathan Groff | Doctor Who | Russell T Davies | Mindhunter | David Tennant | Glee: The newest well-known actor to commit to a role in Doctor Who is Jonathan Groff, who will play what is described as a "key role."

As Jesse St. James in the hit TV musical comedy drama Glee, Holden Ford in the Netflix suspense series Mindhunter, the voice of Kristoff in the Frozen films, and more recent roles in The Matrix Resurrections and M. Night Shyamalan's Knock at the Cabin, Groff has a devoted following.

He has received nominations for Tony and Emmy Awards for his performances as King George III in Hamilton, making him a star on both the big and small screens.

When he announced that he will be appearing in the BBC science fiction series, Groff commented, "I am so thrilled to jump into the extraordinary mind of Russell T Davies and watch the incredible Ncuti Gatwa soar in this iconic role!"

"This is an incredible coup, and a great honour, to get such a huge star striding on to our set," Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies remarked. It will be a blast, so put on your space boots.

The precise role that Groff will play is still up in the air. He joins a long list of renowned guest stars who have already been announced for Doctor Who's upcoming 60th anniversary trilogy and 2024 series, including Jinkx Monsoon from RuPaul's Drag Race, Neil Patrick Harris, and Anita Dobson.

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the series, Doctor Who will return in November 2023 with three special episodes starring David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor and Catherine Tate as Donna Noble. The first episode starring Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor will air over the holiday season.

Millie Gibson of Coronation Street will join Gatwa as Ruby Sunday's new friend. Murray Gold, the composer, and returning showrunner Davies will both return to soundtrack the new episodes.

In the UK and Ireland, Doctor Who will air exclusively on the BBC, while worldwide, new episodes will only be available on Disney Plus.
