ABBA guitarist Lasse Wellander passed away at the age of 70 family share emotional tribute
Lasse Wellander | ABBA | Björn Ulvaeus | Benny Andersson: Lasse Wellander, ABBA's longtime guitarist, passed away following a brief fight with cancer.

The 70-year-old Swedish musical icon was a major contributor to the band's popularity in the 1970s and 1980s and appeared in some of their best successes.

The Sun claims that the guitarist, who appeared on 24 different ABBA records, passed away on Good Friday.

Today, Wellander's family broke the tragic news.

"It is with indescribable sadness that we have to announce that our beloved Lasse has passed away," they wrote in an emotional Facebook post.

"Lasse passed away early on Good Friday while being surrounded by his loved ones after recently becoming ill with what turned out to be cancer that had spread."

"We love and miss you so much," it concluded.

In his native Nora, Sweden, Wellander learned to play the guitar when he was a youngster.

He joined Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad in ABBA in October 1974 and they started recording.

They continued to produce major tunes like Crazy World and Intermezzo No. 1.

The late guitarist continued to perform, playing all eight of ABBA's albums and more than 20 of their songs.

Additionally, he went on tour with the band, playing to packed houses.

Wellander contributed to the wildly popular Mamma Mia! album in 2007, which featured Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried among others.

The new Voyager album by ABBA was published in recent years.

All four members of the iconic quartet were part in the band's unexpected reunion, and 10 new songs were released.

Wellander contributed to its creation, and it was published in November 2021.
